Anthropogenic Disturbances and the Emergence of Native Diseases: a Threat to Forest Health

Climate and weather events, as well as forest management and land-use changes, have been identified as the main environmental drivers of these declines. Research and management should adopt a whole ecosystem perspective for complex diseases caused by native pathogens.

Evolutionary trait-based approaches for predicting future global impacts of plant pathogens in the genus Phytophthora

This study assesses the potential of using biological traits and phylogeny to predict global threats from emerging pathogens, finding that traits, phylogeny, and time since description play significant roles in explaining and predicting their international transport, maximum latitude, and host breadth. Root-attacking species are more widely distributed and attack more host plant families than foliar-attacking species, while host generalist pathogens have certain traits that contribute to their success in various environments. More accurate interspecific data are needed to confirm findings related to cold-tolerant species. The study suggests the development of international collaborations to create centralized databases for pathogen distributions, traits, and phylogeny to support horizon-scanning approaches for identifying potential global threats from pathogens like Phytophthora species.

Summary: Araucaria araucana, also known as monkey puzzle tree, is an ancient conifer endemic to Chilean and Argentinian mountain ranges. A new fungus species, Pewenomyces kutranfy gen. nov. et sp. nov., has been discovered causing cankers on the trees, leading to their decline and potential death. Pathogenicity trials have confirmed the ability of this fungus to inflict similar damage on Araucaria araucana under natural conditions.
