Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Anticancer and Structure Activity Relationship of Non-Symmetrical Choline Kinase Inhibitors

Santiago Schiaffino-Ortega et al.

Summary: Choline kinase inhibitors have shown promising cytotoxic effects on cancer cells, with certain compounds exhibiting both strong inhibitory activity on the enzyme and potent antiproliferative effects. The structure-activity relationship studies revealed that compounds with the N-atom connected to the linker demonstrated better inhibitory results, while those with the O-atom bounded to the linker showed better antiproliferative activity. Additionally, the length of the linker played a role in the inhibitory effect on the enzyme, with shorter linkers yielding better results.

ChoK-Full of Potential: Choline Kinase in B Cell and T Cell Malignancies

Samantha Gokhale et al.

Summary: Aberrant choline metabolism, particularly involving overexpression of choline kinase alpha (CHKα), is a metabolic hallmark of carcinogenesis and tumor progression. Non-invasive imaging techniques such as MRS and PET/CT, utilizing radiolabeled choline analogs, can detect increased choline metabolism and CHKα activity, providing valuable diagnostic and monitoring tools for cancer patients.
