Gut microbiota in human metabolic health and disease

Yong Fan et al.

Summary: The intestinal microbiota plays a significant role in human metabolic health, potentially contributing to the development of common metabolic disorders when dysregulated. Current research is shifting towards cause-and-effect studies and utilizing high-throughput human multi-omics data to identify potential molecular mechanisms behind these associations.

Bacterial-based cancer therapy: An emerging toolbox for targeted drug/gene delivery

Dewu Lin et al.

Summary: Bacteria are increasingly being considered for targeted tumor therapy due to their intrinsic tumor tropism and ability to rapidly colonize in the favorable TME. Compared to other nano-strategies, tumor-targeting bacteria are largely unaffected by the tumor cells and microenvironment. Integration of live bacteria with anti-cancer drugs and nanomaterials can enhance targeted delivery and accumulation in tumors.

Synthesis and delivery of Streptococcus pneumoniae capsular polysaccharides by recombinant attenuated Salmonella vaccines

Huali Su et al.

Summary: The study focuses on developing a low-cost live vaccine against pneumococcal infections using the recombinant attenuated Salmonella vaccine (RASV) system. Oral immunization with RASV-CPS strains elicited robust Th1-biased adaptive immune responses and provided efficient protection against S. pneumoniae challenge infections in mice. The synthesis and delivery of S. pneumoniae capsular polysaccharides using the RASV strains offer an innovative strategy for low-cost pneumococcal vaccine development, production, and use.

A SH3_5 Cell Anchoring Domain for Non-recombinant Surface Display on Lactic Acid Bacteria

Pei Kun Richie Tay et al.

Summary: Lactic acid bacteria can display functional proteins on their cell surface using the cell anchoring domain CAD4a, such as the antioxidant enzyme SOD, which shows potential for treating gut inflammation. CAD4a binds non-covalently to peptidoglycan in the bacterial cell wall, allowing high stability and uniform anchoring of proteins.
