Cancer Statistics, 2021

Rebecca L. Siegel et al.

Summary: Every year, the American Cancer Society projects the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths in the United States, with the latest data showing a significant decline in lung cancer mortality, while prostate cancer mortality has plateaued and breast and colorectal cancer mortality have slowed. Improvements in treatment have accelerated progress against lung cancer, leading to a record drop in overall cancer mortality.

BIRC3 and BIRC5: multi-faceted inhibitors in cancer

Raffaele Frazzi

Summary: BIRC3 and BIRC5 are members of the IAPs family, with the former potentially promoting survival in cancer cells while the latter is often considered an anti-apoptotic molecule. Their roles in different types of tumors vary and their potential as therapeutic targets is still under investigation.

Screening and identification of key genes in imatinib-resistant chronic myelogenous leukemia cells: a bioinformatics study

Hong Zhang et al.

Summary: Chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML) is a common cancer, and imatinib is an effective treatment, but resistance is an issue. By analyzing microarray data, 217 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in imatinib-resistant CML cells were identified, with functions related to cell growth, apoptosis, cell adhesion, nitric oxide biosynthesis, and hematopoietic cell lineage. Nine hub genes associated with cell cycle, peptidase inhibitor activity, and cell division were found, with genes like BIRC5, CCNE2, and MCM4 showing a significant association with survival outcomes. These genes could be potential markers for evaluating imatinib-resistant CML patients.

Immunotherapy in nonsmall-cell lung cancer: current status and future prospects for liquid biopsy

Elena Maria Brozos-Vazquez et al.

Summary: Liquid biopsy is a noninvasive method that can monitor the disease status of cancer patients and help identify those who are most suitable for immunotherapy treatment. By using traditional markers like circulating tumor cells (CTCs), cell-free DNA (cfDNA), and exosomes, it can improve therapeutic decision-making and patient selection for immunotherapy.
