Interferon-γ: teammate or opponent in the tumour microenvironment?

Angela M. Gocher et al.

Summary: IFN gamma plays pleiotropic roles in the tumor microenvironment, acting as both a 'teammate' to promote antitumor immune responses and an 'opponent' promoting tumor growth and suppressing immune responses.

Compartmentalized evolution of hepatitis B virus contributes differently to the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma

Jianhua Yin et al.

Summary: The study revealed that HBV evolution is more advanced in the sera than in tumors among HBV-positive HCC patients. The complexity of HBV and specific mutations have contrary prognostic effects in sera and tumors.

C-terminal truncated HBx initiates hepatocarcinogenesis by downregulating TXNIP and reprogramming glucose metabolism

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: Chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is strongly linked to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development. Genetic alterations and molecular mechanisms, especially HBV-induced metabolic reprogramming, are still underexplored. This study reveals the role of Ct-HBx in HCC progression through downregulation of TXNIP and suggests TXNIP as a potential therapeutic target in treating HCC.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

A Narrative Review on Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 and Its (Patho)Physiological Role: To Target or Not to Target?

Machteld Sillen et al.

Summary: PAI-1 is the primary inhibitor of fibrinolysis, mainly through fast-acting inhibition of tPA and uPA, as well as interactions with biological ligands, affecting pericellular proteolysis and tissue remodeling.

Cancer-associated fibroblast-induced M2-polarized macrophages promote hepatocellular carcinoma progression via the plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 pathway

Shuhai Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that in hepatocellular carcinoma, CAFs promote M2 polarization of TAMs and induce secretion of PAI-1 via CXCL12, enhancing the malignant behavior of HCC cells.
