Roads to the strategic targeting of ovarian cancer treatment

Griselda Irusta

Summary: Ovarian cancer remains a significant cause of cancer death in women despite slight declines in mortality rates. Current treatments show limited efficacy, prompting research into new therapeutic strategies focusing on antiangiogenic approaches and molecular mechanisms involving Notch and beta-catenin proteins in ovarian cancer cells.

15-Hydroxy-8(17),13(E)-labdadiene-19-carboxylic acid (HLCA) inhibits proliferation and induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in ovarian cancer cells

Hadi Bakhtiari et al.

Summary: This study reveals that HLCA-induced cell death may be triggered through the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis, while the activation of caspase-9 and -3 leads to apoptosis. Additionally, HLCA disrupts the cell cycle at the G1 phase by down-regulating cyclin D1 and CDK4, exerting its antiproliferative effects on ovarian cell lines OVCAR-3 and Caov-4, especially at lower concentrations. Further in vivo studies are needed to confirm the therapeutic potential of HLCA as an effective anti-tumor agent.

Mutations and mechanisms of WNT pathway tumour suppressors in cancer

Jeroen M. Bugter et al.

Summary: Activation of WNT-beta-catenin signalling via mutations is a recurrent driver event in human cancer, granting cancer cells sustained growth properties and therapy resistance. Researchers reviewed the recent advances and challenges in understanding how different mutational subsets of WNT tumor suppressor genes link to distinct cancer types, clinical outcomes, and treatment strategies.
