Probiotic Lactiplantibacillus plantarum N-1 could prevent ethylene glycol-induced kidney stones by regulating gut microbiota and enhancing intestinal barrier function

Zhitao Wei et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the potential preventive effects of LPN1 on gut microbiota and intestinal barrier function in rats with hyperoxaluria-induced kidney stones. The results showed that LPN1 can prevent EG-induced hyperoxaluria by regulating gut microbiota and enhancing intestinal barrier function.

Effect of antibiotic treatment on Oxalobacter formigenes colonization of the gut microbiome and urinary oxalate excretion

Lama Nazzal et al.

Summary: This study found that eradication of Helicobacter pylori with antibiotics had significant effects on O. formigenes colonization and urinary electrolytes, and the overall microbiome structure of subjects differed based on the presence of O. formigenes. This suggests that a consortium of bacterial taxa associated with urinary oxalate levels may provide insights for primary prevention of kidney stones in healthy adults.

Kidney stone formation and the gut microbiome are altered by antibiotics in genetic hypercalciuric stone-forming rats

Joshua M. Stern et al.

Summary: Antibiotics can alter the gut microbiome of genetic hypercalciuric stone-forming rats, impacting urine ion excretion and stone formation. Bactrim group showed reduced urine calcium and oxalate, increased CaP supersaturation and calcification, while the Cipro group exhibited increased urine citrate. Antibiotic-induced changes in the gut microbiome are likely contributing factors to alterations in urine chemistry, supersaturation and stone risk.
