Patient Characteristics, Injury Types, and Costs Associated with Secondary Over-Triage of Isolated Cervical Spine Fractures

Joseph Wick et al.

Summary: This study aimed to identify patient variables, injury characteristics, and costs associated with the treatment of isolated cervical spine fractures. The results showed that a significant proportion of patients may be subject to secondary over-triage, and injury characteristics are important for determining the need for surgical treatment and interfacility transfer.

Self-directed rehabilitation training intensity thresholds for efficient recovery of skilled forelimb function in rats with cervical spinal cord injury

Keith K. Fenrich et al.

Summary: The study shows that more rehabilitation training and increased training intensity can improve performance in skilled forelimb motor tasks in rodents with cervical SCI, with better performance linked to differences in corticospinal tract axon collateral densities in injured spinal cords. However, the data also indicate that rehabilitation training becomes progressively less efficient as both the amount and intensity of training increases.

Delivery of chondroitinase by canine mucosal olfactory ensheathing cells alongside rehabilitation enhances recovery after spinal cord injury

Jon Prager et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that genetically modified canine olfactory mucosal OECs can provide sufficient chABC to drive modest functional improvement in a rat SCI model. Animals transplanted with cOEC-chABC showed superior performance in behavioral testing and gait compared to the other two groups, with potential mechanisms of recovery observed.

Effects of combination treatment with transcranial magnetic stimulation and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cell transplantation or Raf inhibition on spinal cord injury in rats

Sining Feng et al.

Summary: Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a global challenge with limited treatment options. This study compared the therapeutic effects of monotherapy (TMS, BMSCs, RafI) and combination therapy (TMS+BMSCs, TMS+RafI) on SCI in rats. The results showed that combination therapy had a better therapeutic effect by further suppressing the Raf/MEK/ERK signaling pathway.

The Unique Properties of Placental Mesenchymal Stromal Cells: A Novel Source of Therapy for Congenital and Acquired Spinal Cord Injury

Edwin S. Kulubya et al.

Summary: Spinal cord injury is a devastating condition for which there is currently no reliable treatment. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells have shown promise in treating SCI, with clinical trials using various adult tissue-derived MSC sources underway. The first stem/stromal cell clinical trial for spina bifida is also currently underway, utilizing placental-derived PMSCs for fetal repair. PMSCs have exhibited unique properties that make them promising for SCI therapy, including neuroprotective, angiogenic, and antioxidant capabilities.

Mechanisms of Stem Cell Therapy in Spinal Cord Injuries

Munehisa Shinozaki et al.

Summary: Spinal cord injury affects 0.93 million people globally each year, with current rehabilitation methods providing limited functional recovery due to the inability to restore damaged tissues. Despite numerous clinical trials on stem cell therapy, the heterogeneous pathophysiology of spinal cord injuries has not been effectively considered, resulting in challenging trial outcomes. Precision medicine based on patient characteristics in the field of SCI shows great potential, particularly in targeting specific mechanisms for different types of injuries.

Current progress of rehabilitative strategies in stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury: a review

Syoichi Tashiro et al.

Summary: Stem cell-based regenerative therapy offers a promising avenue for functional recovery in spinal cord injury patients. Regenerative rehabilitation, with its synergistic effects, feasibility, and diverse properties, is gaining attention. Conditioning/reconditioning, functional training, and physical exercise are key roles of regenerative rehabilitation in enhancing functional recovery following stem cell therapies.
