Estrogen enhances browning in adipose tissue by M2 macrophage polarization via heme oxygenase-1

Ok-Joo Sul et al.

Summary: The loss of ovarian function leads to increased body weight and fat mass due to decreased adipose tissue browning caused by estrogen deficiency. Exogenous estrogen can reverse this change, while M2 polarization mediated by heme oxygenase-1 can enhance adipose tissue browning.

Brown adipose tissue is associated with cardiometabolic health

Tobias Becher et al.

Summary: A retrospective analysis of over 50,000 patients' F-18-FDG PET/CT scans revealed that individuals with brown adipose tissue had lower odds of cardiometabolic conditions. The presence of brown adipose tissue was independently correlated with lower odds of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular disease, congestive heart failure, and hypertension. The beneficial effects of brown adipose tissue were more pronounced in individuals with overweight or obesity, suggesting a potential role in mitigating the deleterious effects of obesity.

The good and the BAT of metabolic sex differences in thermogenic human adipose tissue

Michaela Keuper et al.

Summary: This review discusses the studies on human sex differences in thermogenic adipose tissue and its impact on systemic energy metabolism. Women appear to have a higher prevalence of thermogenic adipose tissue, but the effects on metabolic disease progression and mechanisms are still unclear. Further research on sex-specific adipose metabolism in experimental animal studies may help establish molecular mechanisms for future investigations in humans.

Nutritional Regulation of Human Brown Adipose Tissue

Karla J. Suchacki et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of brown adipose tissue in adult humans offers a new strategy to treat obesity and associated metabolic diseases by increasing energy expenditure. Brown adipose tissue acts as a thermogenic organ that improves insulin sensitivity and lipid clearance, highlighting its beneficial role in metabolic health. Exercise, dietary macronutrients, and bioactive compounds can impact brown adipose tissue activity, and dietary interventions may represent a nonpharmacological means to enhance brown adipose tissue mass and activity for weight loss and improved metabolic health.
