Raman spectroscopy and machine learning for the classification of breast cancers

Lihao Zhang et al.

Summary: Breast cancer subtype classification is crucial and can be accurately and rapidly done using Raman spectroscopy combined with machine learning techniques. The study demonstrates that Raman spectral features can serve as cancer cell biomarkers, and the combination of Raman spectroscopy and machine learning can reveal differences among subtypes.

Identification of Molecular Basis for Objective Discrimination of Breast Cancer Cells (MCF-7) from Normal Human Mammary Epithelial Cells by Raman Microspectroscopy and Multivariate Curve Resolution Analysis

Keita Iwasaki et al.

Summary: Raman spectroscopy has the potential to improve accuracy of cytological and histopathological diagnosis. This study identified five pure biomolecular spectra, with lipid components potentially serving as a basis for discrimination. The technique could become an excellent cytodiagnostic tool for distinguishing breast cancer from normal cells.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Epigenetic Alterations in Triple-Negative Breast Cancer-The Critical Role of Extracellular Matrix

Vasiliki Zolota et al.

Summary: Current data suggest that epigenetic alterations play a key role in the initiation and subclonal evolution of breast cancer, especially in the aggressive molecular subgroup of triple-negative breast cancer. The extracellular matrix undergoes significant structural alterations during cancer progression, which are closely linked with epigenetic modifiers. Targeting tumor microenvironment and epigenetic pathways may provide potential therapeutic strategies, particularly in triple-negative breast cancer where standard chemotherapy is limited.

Breast cancer as an example of tumour heterogeneity and tumour cell plasticity during malignant progression

Fabiana Luond et al.

Summary: Tumour heterogeneity, arising from intrinsic and extrinsic factors, has negative impacts on therapy response and prognosis. Cancer cell plasticity enables rapid adaptation to microenvironmental cues, playing a critical role in tumour progression and heterogeneity.

Morphodynamic signatures of MDA-MB-231 single cells and cell doublets undergoing invasion in confined microenvironments

Xingjian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the phenotypes of highly aggressive cancer cells in confined microenvironments, revealing two distinct migratory phenotypes in fast migrating single cells and an increase in protrusions at the leading edge of cells under geometric confinement. The findings elucidate the impact of geometric constraints on cell behavior and morphodynamics associated with different cell phenotypes.

Self-absorption corrected non-invasive transmission Raman spectroscopy (of biological tissue)

Benjamin Gardner et al.

Summary: The article introduces a method to correct self-attenuation artifacts in Raman spectroscopy in deep biological tissue analysis. The method successfully reduces Raman spectral intensity variances and distortions in specific peak ratios, with potential to improve detection limits and depth in clinical specimen analysis.
