Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Biological Behavior and Lipid Metabolism of Colon Cancer Cells are Regulated by a Combination of Sterol Regulatory Element-Binding Protein 1 and ATP Citrate Lyase

Zhendong Qiu et al.

Summary: Research showed that the knockdown of ATP citrate lyase (ACLY) and Sterol regulatory element binding protein 1 (SREBP1) genes inhibits proliferation, migration, and invasion of colorectal cancer cells, while promoting apoptosis. These findings suggest potential new targets for treating colorectal cancer through modulation of lipid synthesis in cancer cells.

The Role of Mitochondrial Dysfunction in Vascular Disease, Tumorigenesis, and Diabetes

Olga A. Zhunina et al.

Summary: Mitochondrial dysfunction is closely associated with various human pathologies, with ROS and RNS playing a critical role in causing protein and mtDNA damage and leading to the development of diseases. Recent studies have identified numerous mtDNA mutations linked to different human pathologies, each having distinct effects in disease progression.

Colorectal Cancer Apoptosis Induced by Dietary delta-Valerobetaine Involves PINK1/Parkin Dependent-Mitophagy and SIRT3

Nunzia D'Onofrio et al.

Summary: This study aimed to deepen current knowledge on the mechanism of delta VB-induced colon cancer cell death by investigating the apoptotic cascade in colorectal adenocarcinoma SW480 and SW620 cells and evaluating the molecular players of mitochondrial dysfunction. Results indicated that delta VB activated mitochondrial apoptosis through PINK1/Parkin pathways.

Effect of Breeding Techniques and Prolonged Post Dry Aging Maturation Process on Biomolecule Levels in Raw Buffalo Meat

Angela Salzano et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different breeding techniques and a prolonged post dry aging maturation process on biomolecules in raw buffalo meat. Results showed that buffaloes raised in a larger space and fed green forage had significantly higher biomolecule content, and extending the PDA maturation process did not affect microbial profiles.

Cytotoxicity of metformin against HT29 colon cancer cells contributes to mitochondrial Sirt3 upregulation

Forouzan Khodaei et al.

Summary: The study found that metformin increased the activity and expression of SIRT3 in cancer cells, disrupted mitochondrial activity through increased ROS levels, and induced cell death in HT-29 cells.
