Impact of Lagtime, Health Insurance Type, and Income Status at Diagnosis on the Long-Term Survival of Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Patients

Branko Cuglievan et al.

Summary: The long-term survival outcomes of adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer patients are associated with delayed diagnosis, health insurance type, and income status. Patients with long lagtimes to diagnosis, private insurance, and household incomes >U.S. $50,000 had better late overall survival (LOS) than those with public insurance or household incomes <= U.S. $50,000.

Evaluating Age-related Disparity of Outcomes in Ewing Sarcoma Patients Treated at a Pediatric Academic Medical Center

Michael P. Perisa et al.

Summary: Adolescent and young adult patients with Ewing sarcoma have inferior survival compared to pediatric patients, likely due to higher incidence of metastatic disease and larger tumors in AYA patients. Treatment-related differences do not appear to contribute significantly to the higher mortality among AYA patients.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Risk of digestive cancers in a cohort of 69 460 five-year survivors of childhood cancer in Europe: the PanCareSurFup study

Raoul C. Reulen et al.

Summary: Survivors of childhood cancer, particularly those with Wilms tumor and Hodgkin lymphoma, are at increased risk of developing specific digestive subsequent primary neoplasms. The risks are especially high for colorectal SPNs in these survivors, warranting consideration for colonoscopy surveillance despite current recommendations.

Young Adult Cancer Survivorship: Recommendations for Patient Follow-up, Exercise Therapy, and Research

Scott C. Adams et al.

Summary: Many survivors of adolescent and young adult cancers face long-term risks of late effects, but evidence-based guidelines for this group have not been developed. A symposium aimed at AYA stakeholders served as a starting point to address this issue and highlighted knowledge gaps for future research.

Association of body mass index with toxicity and survival in pediatric patients treated with cisplatin-containing regimens

Rusha Bhandari et al.

Summary: Malnutrition is associated with TRT in pediatric patients with solid tumors, with obesity at diagnosis significantly increasing the risk for severe TRT and worse event-free survival and overall survival. Prospective studies are needed to further understand the role of obesity in treatment outcomes.
