Intestinal pathophysiological abnormalities in steady state and after vaso-occlusive crisis in murine sickle cell disease

Maria Poplawska et al.

Summary: The study found that both SCD patients and Townes mice show abnormalities in the intestines, which worsen rapidly after VOC induction, and are associated with increased intestinal microbial density. The results suggest that SCD and its complications, rather than hospitalization or medications, are responsible for the intestinal pathophysiological changes.

Summary: Fecal microbiota transplantation is an effective strategy to correct microbial dysbiosis in diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome. For patients with IBS-D, FMT with antibiotic pretreatment significantly reduces bacterial engraftment.

Summary: In patients with CDI, the use of systemic antibiotics, presence of inflammatory bowel disease, and poor bowel preparation are predictors for FMT failure. Patients with FMT failure can be managed with antibiotics and/or repeat FMT.

Oral Fecal Microbiota Transplant Capsules Are Safe and Effective for Recurrent Clostridioides difficile Infection A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Charles Du et al.

Summary: Oral fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) capsules show promising efficacy in treating recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI), with an overall cure rate of 82.1% and a low rate of serious adverse events. Further studies are necessary to optimize treatment protocols and outcomes.

Fecal microbiota transplant promotes response in immunotherapy-refractory melanoma patients

Erez N. Baruch et al.

Summary: This study conducted a phase 1 clinical trial and found that FMT treatment in patients with anti-PD-1-refractory metastatic melanoma, along with reinduction of anti-PD-1 immunotherapy, resulted in clinical responses in some patients. This suggests that modulating the gut microbiota could be a promising approach in cancer treatment.

Fecal microbiota transplant overcomes resistance to anti-PD-1 therapy in melanoma patients

Diwakar Davar et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that fecal microbiota transplantation combined with anti-PD-1 therapy can overcome resistance to anti-PD-1 in a subset of PD-1 refractory melanoma patients, leading to clinical benefits. This approach induced changes in the gut microbiome and reprogrammed the tumor microenvironment, ultimately enhancing the efficacy of anti-PD-1 treatment.

Summary: FMT therapy for patients with grade IV steroid-refractory GI-GvHD demonstrates significant efficacy, prolonging survival and reducing mortality rates. During the follow-up period, both event-free survival and overall survival were improved in the FMT group. The therapy shows promising effectiveness with minimal side effects.

The use of Faecal Microbiota Transplantation (FMT) in Europe: A Europe-wide survey

Summary: The study investigated the clinical use and organization of FMT in Europe in 2019 and found that it is a common treatment for multiple, recurrent CDI and experimental indications. Participating centers demonstrated high safety standards and most were regulated by health authorities. However, there is a significant gap in FMT coverage, indicating the need for increased clinical awareness and activity in Europe.
