Utility of intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging for giant cell tumor of bone after denosumab treatment: a pilot study

Taisuke Furuta et al.

Summary: Intraoperative MRI was found to be effective in detecting and reducing residual tumor tissue in patients with GCTB after denosumab therapy. The detection rate of residual tumor by iMRI was 100% and the procedure was performed safely without complications. No adverse events or recurrences were observed during the follow-up period, indicating the potential of iMRI in preventing GCTB recurrence.

Malignancy in giant cell tumor of bone: analysis of an open-label phase 2 study of denosumab

Emanuela Palmerini et al.

Summary: GCTB is a rare bone tumor that can rarely transform into malignancies. A post hoc analysis found that 3.8% of patients misdiagnosed with GCTB were actually malignancies, including primary and secondary malignant GCTB, sarcomatous transformations, and other types of malignancies. Signs of poor mineralization or lack of response to denosumab treatment may indicate potential misdiagnoses and warrant close monitoring.

Malignancy in giant cell tumor of bone in the extremities

Weifeng Liu et al.

Summary: Malignant giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is rare and often presents in the distal femur and proximal tibia with pain and swelling. The mean latent period for secondary malignant GCTB is 7.9 years, with a longer interval to recurrence seen in malignant recurrence. The 5 and 10-year overall survival rate of malignant GCTB were 45.8% and 36.1% respectively, with the 5-year survival rates of primary and secondary malignant GCTB being 56.2% and 40.0%.
