Genetic deletion of Polo-like kinase 2 reduces alpha-synuclein serine-129 phosphorylation in presynaptic terminals but not Lewy bodies

Leah J. Weston et al.

Summary: PLK2 is a potential Lewy body kinase, and its deletion reduces the phosphorylation level of α-synuclein at presynaptic terminals but has no effect on phosphorylation levels in Lewy bodies. Inhibition of PLK2 shows promise in developing new therapeutics, yet the mechanism of neuroprotection through PLK2 inhibition is unlikely due to reducing α-synuclein phosphorylation. The true Lewy body kinase still awaits discovery.
