Outcomes Among Patients Hospitalized With COVID-19 and Acute Kidney Injury

Jia H. Ng et al.

Summary: The study found that COVID-19 patients with AKI had a higher risk of death, but good kidney function recovery among survivors. However, some patients still needed dialysis at discharge.

Ferritin level: A predictor of severity and mortality in hospitalized COVID-19 patients

Moudhi Alroomi et al.

Summary: This study investigated in-hospital mortality in severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 patients stratified by serum ferritin levels. The results showed that higher levels of serum ferritin, along with hypertension and pneumonia, were associated with predicting in-hospital mortality. Patients with ferritin levels > 1000 had a higher mortality rate.

Anemia is associated with severe illness in COVID-19: A retrospective cohort study

Zheying Tao et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of anemia on COVID-19 patients and found that anemia is associated with the severity of COVID-19, with anemic patients more likely to have comorbidities and severe illness. Anemia was related to elevated levels of CRP, PCT, and other laboratory indices, and was positively associated with the severity of COVID-19 in terms of dyspnea, CRP, and PCT.

AKI in Hospitalized Patients with COVID-19

Lili Chan et al.

Summary: The study found that AKI is common among hospitalized COVID-19 patients in the United States, with a 46% occurrence rate and 19% of patients requiring dialysis. Independently predicting severe AKI were chronic kidney disease, male gender, and higher serum potassium levels at admission. In-hospital mortality was significantly higher in patients with AKI compared to those without AKI, with only 30% of AKI patients recovering kidney function by the time of discharge.

Summary: The study revealed that COVID-19 patients have a higher incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI), and the independent association between COVID-19 and AKI was confirmed, possibly due to increased inflammatory markers and greater use of medications.

Summary: This multicenter retrospective study found that nearly half of COVID-19 patients with ARDS experienced AKI during their hospital stay, and the coexistence of AKI significantly increased the mortality of these patients.

Summary: AKI is common among critically ill COVID-19 patients and is often associated with early IMV. One in six AKI patients required RRT, and one in three patients treated with RRT died in hospital. These findings provide important prognostic information for clinicians.

Increased levels of ferritin on admission predicts intensive care unit mortality in patients with COVID-19

Fuxue Deng et al.

Summary: The aim of the study was to assess if hyperferritinemia could be a predicting factor of mortality in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. The concentration of ferritin was significantly higher in critical group compared with moderate and severe groups, and positively correlated with other inflammatory cytokines. Ferritin measured at admission may serve as an independent factor for predicting in-hospital mortality in patients with COVID-19 in ICU.

Severe Acute Kidney Injury in Critically Ill Patients with COVID-19 Admitted to ICU: Incidence, Risk Factors, and Outcomes

Muriel Ghosn et al.

Summary: This study found a high incidence of severe AKI in critically ill patients with COVID-19, which was associated with factors such as age, mechanical ventilation, creatinine level, and ECMO use. Severe AKI was independently associated with increased risk of in-hospital mortality and prolonged hospital stay, highlighting the importance of timely recognition during SARS-CoV-2 infection.
