Severe clinical outcomes of COVID-19 associated with proton pump inhibitors: a nationwide cohort study with propensity score matching

Seung Won Lee et al.

Summary: The study found that current use of PPIs was associated with a higher risk of severe clinical outcomes of COVID-19, while past use of PPIs was not significantly associated with the infection of SARS-CoV-2.

Depicting SARS-CoV-2 faecal viral activity in association with gut microbiota composition in patients with COVID-19

Tao Zuo et al.

Summary: This study reveals active and prolonged 'quiescent' gastrointestinal infection of SARS-CoV-2 in patients with COVID-19, even without gastrointestinal manifestations and after recovery from respiratory infection. Patients with active SARS-CoV-2 gastrointestinal infection have a gut microbiota characterized by enrichment of opportunistic pathogens and an increased functional capacity for nucleotide and amino acid biosynthesis and carbohydrate metabolism.

Viral infection and smell loss: The case of COVID-19

Isaias Glezer et al.

Summary: Olfactory disorders are increasingly being reported in individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2, impacting quality of life and potentially leading to various health issues. Infected individuals experience sudden loss of smell without the typical nasal congestion seen in common colds or other respiratory infections, suggesting a distinct mechanism for olfactory loss in COVID-19.

Gut microbiota composition reflects disease severity and dysfunctional immune responses in patients with COVID-19

Yun Kit Yeoh et al.

Summary: This study found that the gut microbiome composition was significantly altered in patients with COVID-19 compared to non-COVID-19 individuals, regardless of medication received. Certain gut commensals known for their immunomodulatory potential were underrepresented in patients and remained low even after disease resolution. Additionally, the altered gut microbiome composition correlated with disease severity and elevated levels of inflammatory cytokines and blood markers.

Summary: The study found that a diet characterized by healthy plant-based foods was associated with a lower risk and severity of COVID-19. This association was particularly evident in areas with higher socioeconomic deprivation.
