Refuting the myth of a 'tsunami' of mental ill-health in populations affected by COVID-19: evidence that response to the pandemic is heterogeneous, not homogeneous

Mark Shevlin et al.

Summary: This study conducted a longitudinal survey of UK adults and found that there is heterogeneity in the mental health response to the COVID-19 pandemic within the population. The prevalence of anxiety-depression remained stable, while COVID-19-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) reduced over time. Three trajectories of mental health were identified: stable, improving, and deteriorating, and psychological factors played a significant role in differentiating these trajectories.

Evaluating the mental health impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic: perceived risk of COVID-19 infection and childhood trauma predict adult depressive symptoms in urban South Africa

Andrew Wooyoung Kim et al.

Summary: The national lockdown in South Africa has posed serious threats to the public mental health, with higher perceived risk of COVID-19 infection being associated with greater depressive symptoms. During the pandemic, individuals experienced anxiety, financial insecurity, fear of infection, and rumination. Immediate and accessible psychological resources are needed to address the high rates of severe mental illness and low availability of mental healthcare.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought attention to long-standing health disparities and their connection to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), which disproportionately affect historically oppressed groups.
