Hepatobiliary acid-base homeostasis: Insights from analogous secretory epithelia

David C. Trampert et al.

Summary: Epithelial cells secrete bicarbonate-rich fluid to control pH, alter viscosity, and protect cellular structures. The cellular machinery involved includes carbonic anhydrase enzymes, transporters of the solute carrier family, and pH sensors, which regulate pH through protein-protein interactions, establishment of an electrochemical gradient, and bicarbonate sensing.

Real-World Clinical Management of Patients with Primary Biliary Cholangitis-A Retrospective Multicenter Study from Germany

Anne-Christin Beatrice Wilde et al.

Summary: This large retrospective multicenter study evaluated response rates to standard UDCA therapy and subsequent second-line treatment regimens in PBC patients from 10 independent hepatological referral centers in Germany. High response rates were observed following UDCA first-line standard treatment, with diverse second-line treatment regimens showing significant effects, particularly the addition of bezafibrates.

Aged Mice Devoid of the M3 Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor Develop Mild Dry Eye Disease

Aytan Musayeva et al.

Summary: The study suggests that the M-3 receptor subtype plays a pivotal role in tear production, and its absence leads to ocular surface changes typical for dry eye disease (DED) at an advanced age. M3R(-/-) mice showed reduced tear volume, mild corneal epitheliopathy, decreased conjunctival goblet cell density, increased oxidative stress, and elevated mRNA expression levels for inflammatory cytokines and prooxidant redox enzymes at the age of 15 months.

Blockage of Cholinergic Signaling via Muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor 3 Inhibits Tumor Growth in Human Colorectal Adenocarcinoma

Nina A. Hering et al.

Summary: Darifenacin, a selective M3R antagonist, inhibits the growth and invasion of colon carcinoma cells in vitro and in vivo, suggesting it may be a beneficial treatment for colorectal cancer. Targeting cholinergic signaling via M3R by darifenacin could be a promising addition to systemic therapy for CRC patients expressing M3R.
