A novel cascade allows Metarhizium robertsii to distinguish cuticle and hemocoel microenvironments during infection of insects

Xing Zhang et al.

Summary: Pathogenic fungi, such as Metarhizium robertsii, have been found to regulate their response to different microenvironments during infection. This regulation involved transcription factor COH2 activating expression of cuticle penetration genes on insect cuticle, and protein COH1 interacting with COH2 to down-regulate cuticle penetration genes and up-regulate genes for hemocoel colonization in the hemocoel. These findings provide valuable insights into fungal pathogenicity in insects.

A Novel Nitrogen and Carbon Metabolism Regulatory Cascade Is Implicated in Entomopathogenicity of the Fungus Metarhizium robertsii

Yamin Meng et al.

Summary: The study identified a novel fungal cascade involving Fus3-MAPK and RNS1 in regulating the degradation of insect cuticular lipids, proteins, and chitin, as well as activating genes for utilizing less-favored carbon and nitrogen sources. This cascade plays a critical role in fungal metabolism and pathogenesis in insects, providing important insights into the regulation of carbon and nitrogen metabolism in fungi.
