Role of iodine oxoacids in atmospheric aerosol nucleation

Xu-Cheng He et al.

Summary: This study found that the nucleation rates of iodic acid particles are rapid and can even exceed those of sulfuric acid-ammonia particles. Ion-induced nucleation involves IO3- and the sequential addition of HIO3, while neutral nucleation involves the repeated addition of iodous acid (HIO2) followed by HIO3, with HIO2 playing a key stabilizing role. Freshly formed particles are composed almost entirely of HIO3, which promotes rapid particle growth at the kinetic limit.

Measurement report: Indirect evidence for the controlling influence of acidity on the speciation of iodine in Atlantic aerosols

Alex R. Baker et al.

Summary: The study found that the speciation of soluble iodine in aerosols varies significantly depending on size fractions and pollution levels. Fine mode aerosols contain higher proportions of iodide and soluble organic iodine, while coarse mode aerosols are dominated by iodate. Aerosols from unpolluted sea spray or mineral dust have the highest proportions of iodate.
