The importance of individual-to-society feedbacks in animal ecology and evolution

Mauricio Cantor et al.

Summary: The social decisions individuals make shape social structure, which in turn determines how individuals interact with their environment. However, there is a lack of research linking the perspectives on individual social decisions and the impact of social structure on social processes. This review identifies well-studied areas and highlights the disconnection between the two perspectives in social structure research. By synthesizing existing research, new prospects are identified where the interplay between social structure and social processes can reveal new dimensions to old questions in ecology and evolution.

A deep active learning system for species identification and counting in camera trap images

Mohammad Sadegh Norouzzadeh et al.

Summary: The paper introduces a novel active learning system that combines machine intelligence and human intelligence to minimize the manual work required to train computer vision models, effectively addressing the challenge of processing a large number of images in camera trap surveys. By using object detection models and transfer learning, overfitting to specific image backgrounds (such as camera locations) is reduced, thus improving model accuracy.

A hierarchical 3D-motion learning framework for animal spontaneous behavior mapping

Kang Huang et al.

Summary: The study introduces a parallel and multi-layered framework to learn the hierarchical dynamics of animal behavior and map behavior into the feature space objectively. Experimental results suggest that this framework has wide applications, including modeling animal disease model phenotypes and relationships between neural circuits and behavior.

Giant panda behaviour recognition using images

Pranjal Swarup et al.

Summary: Monitoring giant panda behavior is crucial for conservation, but traditional methods are difficult and prone to errors. A new automated recognition method based on Faster R-CNN and modified ResNet was proposed, achieving high accuracy in detecting panda behaviors and facial motions in captivity.

First Evidence of Chimpanzee Extractive Tool Use in Cantanhez, Guinea-Bissau: Cross-Community Variation in Honey Dipping

Joana Bessa et al.

Summary: The study explores the use of honey dipping tools in chimpanzee communities in Cantanhez National Park, Guinea-Bissau, revealing significant variations in tools used among different communities and tool kits. This highlights the diversity in chimpanzee tool manufacture and use at local scales, filling gaps in our understanding of their cultural repertoire.
