Metal-free boron and sulphur co-doped carbon nanofibers with optimized p-band centers for highly efficient nitrogen electroreduction to ammonia

Yankun Wen et al.

Summary: In this study, a breakthrough was proposed in overcoming high energy barriers for N2 absorption and activation by tuning the center positions of boron in carbon nanofibers. The heteroatom doping of sulfur atoms was found to play a key role in facilitating N2 adsorption and reducing energy barriers for rate-determining steps. The novel S6.23-B8.09/CNFs showed the highest NRR activity with a Faradaic efficiency of 22.4% and NH3yield of 0.223 mu mol h-1 cm-2 at -0.7 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, highlighting the importance of center positions in heteroatom-doped carbon catalysts for NRR activity.

Effects of hydrophobic layer on selective electrochemical nitrogen fixation of self-supporting nanoporous Mo4P3 catalyst under ambient conditions

Lin Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, the modification of the d-band structure of self-supporting nanoporous Mo4P3 catalyst with a hydrophobic layer successfully suppressed the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and improved the active sites and NH3 yield of the ENRR process. The hydrophobization method offers a promising strategy for enhancing the performance of ENRR and could be applied to a variety of metal catalysts.

Nitrogen reduction to ammonia at high efficiency and rates based on a phosphonium proton shuttle

Bryan H. R. Suryanto et al.

Summary: Ammonia (NH3) is a globally important commodity for fertilizer production, but its synthesis by the Haber-Bosch process causes substantial emissions of carbon dioxide. Alternative methods being explored include the promising electrochemical lithium-mediated nitrogen reduction reaction, which has required sacrificial sources of protons. In this study, a phosphonium salt is introduced as a proton shuttle to help resolve this limitation, resulting in high NH3 production rates and demonstrated continuous operation for more than 3 days.

Understanding potential-dependent competition between electrocatalytic dinitrogen and proton reduction reactions

Changhyeok Choi et al.

Summary: The study investigates the potential-dependent competition between electrochemical NRR and HER, revealing that the crossover of H coverage and N-2 coverage leads to the premature decrease of NRR activity. The larger charge transfer in H+ adsorption poses a fundamental challenge to practical electrochemical NRR, and several strategies are suggested to overcome this challenge.
