Effect of Electrolyte Composition and Concentration on Pulsed Potential Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Rileigh Casebolt et al.

Summary: The relationship between electrolyte concentration/composition and product distribution for pulsed potential electrochemical CO2 reduction (eCO(2)R) differs from that of constant potential eCO(2)R. Pulsed potential eCO(2)R suppresses H-2 formation relative to CH4 due to periodic desorption of surface protons, while constant potential eCO(2)R favors H-2 production. Increasing KCl concentration during pulsed potential eCO(2)R greatly enhances C-2 product formation.

Cu(I) Reducibility Controls Ethylene vs Ethanol Selectivity on (100)-Textured Copper during Pulsed CO2 Reduction

Zhichu Tang et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the enhancement of ethylene selectivity and achievement of selectivity towards either ethylene or ethanol by using pulsed overpotentials. The improved CO dimerization kinetics on active Cu surface and reduced hydrogen adsorption coverage during pulsed CO2RR are crucial for achieving this goal.

Optimizing CO Coverage on Rough Copper Electrodes: Effect of the Partial Pressure of CO and Electrolyte Anions (pH) on Selectivity toward Ethylene

Mozhgan Moradzaman et al.

Summary: In inert gas, increasing the partial pressure of CO significantly enhances the Faradaic efficiency for ethylene, while in a mixture of CO and CO2, there is an optimal range for the partial pressure of CO. Modifying the anion in solution can greatly affect the optimum FE for ethylene, which is correlated with CO coverage and pH.

Surface characterization of copper electrocatalysts by lead underpotential deposition

Paula Sebastian-Pascual et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the lead (Pb) underpotential deposition (UPD) on well-defined Cu electrode surfaces as a tool to analyze the surface state and determine the presence and distribution of domains on Cu catalysts. The voltammetric profile of Pb UPD is strongly sensitive to changes in the structure of the Cu electrode, allowing for the monitoring of the appearance of new defects and domains. Pb UPD can provide the electrochemical fingerprint of Cu catalysts and separate the contribution of different facets and defects in the surface structure.

Electrolyte-Guided Design of Electroreductive CO Coupling on Copper Surfaces

Sneha A. Akhade et al.

Summary: Manipulating the interfacial distribution of electrolytic ions can enhance the efficiency and selectivity of CO2 reduction to C-2 products. This can be achieved through predictive tuning of the solution microenvironment on copper and by stimulating restructuring of the electrochemical double layer using competing electrolyte constituents. Our findings demonstrate the potential of molecular-scale electrolyte engineering to tailor CO2R activity and selectivity.
