Modelling social readers: novel tools for addressing reception from online book reviews

Pavan Holur et al.

Summary: Social reading sites provide insights into readers' responses to literature, and data analysis can offer critical understanding of how people engage with texts. Computational modeling of reviews on sites like Goodreads reveals a non-professional discussion space, including summaries of plots, subplots sequencing, and readers' impressions of characters. Through the development of computational tools, researchers are able to extract a reader-generated narrative model and gain multi-modal insights into readers' opinions of characters.
