MAVEN Survey of Magnetic Flux Rope Properties in the Martian Ionosphere: Comparison With Three Types of Formation Mechanisms

C. F. Bowers et al.

Summary: By analyzing data from the MAVEN spacecraft, researchers have identified 121 magnetic flux ropes on Mars, formed via different mechanisms and impacting the Martian plasma environment. The study demonstrates that the formation mechanism of a flux rope influences its impact on the Martian magnetospheric and atmospheric environment.

On the Growth and Development of Non-Linear Kelvin-Helmholtz Instability at Mars: MAVEN Observations

Gangkai Poh et al.

Summary: This study analyzed MAVEN observations of Kelvin-Helmholtz vortices at Mars' induced magnetosphere boundary, revealing magnetic field perturbations, density decrease, and plasma velocity enhancement. The results support the non-linear growth of K-H instability and are consistent with 3D local magnetohydrodynamics simulation results. Observations suggest particle energization within the K-H vortex structure and estimate the lower limit on the instability linear growth rate.
