Failure in Confined Brazilian Tests on Sandstone

Tyler Hagengruber et al.

Summary: The strength of rocks in the confined tension region is significantly influenced by the intermediate principal stress, with increasing stress leading to higher strength. Additionally, as the confining pressure increases, there is a transition from tension-dominated failure to shear processes dominating failure.

Tensile Strength and Fracture Surface Morphology of Granite Under Confined Direct Tension Test

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the tensile strength and fracture morphology of granite samples under different confining pressures and tensile loading rates through direct tension tests. It was found that the tensile strength of rock first increases and then decreases with the increase in confining pressure, and slightly increases with the increase in tensile loading rate. The study also revealed that the roughness of fracture surface is closely related to the micro and macro-fracture patterns, providing insight into the correlation between tensile strength and fracture roughness with confining pressure and loading rate.
