Predicting soil organic carbon movement and concentration using a soil erosion and Landscape Evolution Model

G. R. Hancock et al.

Summary: Explicit relationships and numerical models linking landscape and topographic characteristics with soil organic carbon (SOC) processes are necessary. The Landscape Evolution Model (LEM) calibrated in this study accurately predicts erosion and deposition, with erosion rates comparable to independent measurements. The majority of SOC is found to be transported in the top 2 cm of soil, and disturbance to the hillslope can significantly increase SOC export.

The extent of soil loss across the US Corn Belt

Evan A. Thaler et al.

Summary: Soil erosion in agricultural landscapes, particularly in the Corn Belt of the midwestern United States, has led to a significant loss of A-horizon soil, affecting crop yields and causing economic losses. This research reveals that tillage-induced erosion plays a crucial role in soil loss, which has been significantly underestimated by previous soil survey-based methods. Models used to assess nationwide soil loss trends in the United States do not simulate tillage erosion, highlighting the need for improved erosion prediction and management strategies.

Tillage erosion as an important driver of in-field biomass patterns in an intensively used hummocky landscape

Lena Katharina Ottl et al.

Summary: The study found that areas affected by erosion had lower EVI values, while depositional areas had higher EVI values. The differences in EVI between eroded and depositional sites were more pronounced in the normal year. The net effect of total erosion on EVI compared to areas without pronounced erosion or deposition ranged from -10.2% for maize in the normal year to +3.7% for winter barley in the wet year.

Regional environmental controllers influence continental scale soil carbon stocks and future carbon dynamics

Daniel Ruiz Potma Goncalves et al.

Summary: Understanding the environmental factors influencing soil organic carbon (SOC) can help predict the impact of changing conditions more accurately and reduce uncertainties in geospatial and Earth System Models. Higher precipitation and lower temperatures were associated with higher SOC stocks in most ecoregions, while land cover types were crucial in drier ecosystems.

Tracing erosion rates in loess landscape of the Trzebnica Hills (Poland) over time using fallout and cosmogenic nuclides

Aleksandra Loba et al.

Summary: The study determined long- and short-term erosion rates of loess deposits in south-western Poland, finding that short-term erosion rates are up to 10 times higher than long-term rates. Erosion rates are closely related to terrain relief, with more erosion in steeper slope sections and less in lower parts.
