Seasonal evolution of supraglacial lakes and rivers on the southwest Greenland Ice Sheet

Kang Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that at elevations above 1600 meters, 21% of supraglacial lakes and 28% of supraglacial rivers drain into moulins, even during a colder-than-average melt season; supraglacial lakes dominate instantaneous surface meltwater storage, while supraglacial rivers dominate total surface meltwater area and discharge; the combined surface area of supraglacial lakes and rivers is strongly correlated with modeled surface runoff; among the three models examined, MERRA-2 runoff yields the highest overall correlation with observed proglacial discharge in the Watson River.

Supraglacial River Forcing of Subglacial Water Storage and Diurnal Ice Sheet Motion

L. C. Smith et al.

Summary: The study reveals a strong correlation between short-term ice speed acceleration and supraglacial river discharge, indicating the importance of supraglacial rivers and subglacial water storage fluctuations in driving ice motion. These findings challenge the theoretical steady state basal sliding laws and suggest that moulin and proglacially induced fluctuations in subglacial water storage play a key role in short-term ice accelerations.

Storage and export of microbial biomass across the western Greenland Ice Sheet

T. D. L. Irvine-Fynn et al.

Summary: This study quantifies microbial abundance and cellular biomass flux in the western sector of the Greenland Ice Sheet, revealing slow interstitial water flow but high cell transport to supraglacial streams per square meter. The research suggests that cellular carbon accumulation in the weathering crust exceeds fluvial export, providing significant flux to support heterotrophs and methanogenesis at the bed.

Hourly surface meltwater routing for a Greenlandic supraglacial catchment across hillslopes and through a dense topological channel network

Colin J. Gleason et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found complex perennial supraglacial stream and river networks on the Greenland Ice Sheet, with current SMB models overestimating meltwater runoff. By using the hillslope river routing model, researchers were able to achieve accurate simulations of supraglacial channel flows and highlight the importance of including hillslope routing in the modeling process.

Challenges in predicting Greenland supraglacial lake drainages at the regional scale

Kristin Poinar et al.

Summary: This study used remote-sensing data to analyze the relationship between strain rates and lake drainages in western Greenland. The study found that moulins associated with fast-draining lakes have significantly higher extensional background strain rates. However, the current ice sheet velocity products cannot accurately resolve the transient strain rates that drive fast lake drainages.
