Time-Dependent Naphthalene Toxicity in Anabas testudineus (Bloch): A Multiple Endpoint Biomarker Approach

Sukhendu Dey et al.

Summary: The study found that Anabas testudineus exposed to naphthalene suffered significant impacts on blood pathophysiology, with decreases in red blood cells, Hb, and platelet levels, as well as enhanced levels in other blood parameters. Additionally, exposure to naphthalene led to changes in serum biochemical parameters, indicating more harmful effects under long-term exposure.

Chemical Fingerprinting of HULIS in Particulate Matters Emitted from Residential Coal and Biomass Combustion

Yaoqiang Huo et al.

Summary: Identification of humic-like substances structures and components in PM2.5 is still challenging due to their complexity. A combination of two-dimensional gas chromatography-time-of-flight mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight mass spectrometry was used to address this complexity, revealing a significantly higher number of compound species in HULIS compared to previous studies, with aromatics being the most abundant compounds.

Metabolomic Changes after Subacute Exposure to Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons: A Natural Experiment among Healthy Travelers from Los Angeles to Beijing

Xinchen Lu et al.

Summary: By conducting metabolomics analysis on healthy young adults exposed to elevated PAHs after traveling to Beijing, it was found that 50 metabolites significantly changed 6-8 weeks later, with metabolites falling into oxidative homeostasis-related response or delayed enzymatic deinduction response. The study results suggested differential subacute effects of unsubstituted and alkylated PAHs, with some metabolite changes being reversible. Further research is needed to elucidate the role of metabolite changes reversibility in the adverse health effects of PAHs.

Intermediate Volatile Organic Compound Emissions from Residential Solid Fuel Combustion Based on Field Measurements in Rural China

Zhe Qian et al.

Summary: Residential solid fuel combustion (RSFC) is a major cause of air pollution in China, and a study conducted field measurements from 166 rural households in eastern China to update emission factors and chemical profiles database. The study found that different fuels and stoves can affect the emission of intermediate volatile organic compounds (IVOCs), with crop straw, fuelwood, and coal having different emission levels. Analysis showed that RSFC chemical profiles are characterized by lower branched alkanes and higher polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), allowing them to be distinguished from vehicle sources.

Identification of two main origins of intermediate-volatility organic compound emissions from vehicles in China through two-phase simultaneous characterization

Yuanxiang Liu et al.

Summary: IVOC emissions from gasoline and diesel vehicles were characterized in a study, showing that diesel vehicles had emission factors approximately 16 times those of gasoline vehicles, with IVOCs mainly concentrated in the particle phase. Vehicle fuel was identified as the main source of gas-phase IVOC emissions, while lubricating oil played a significant role in contributing to particle-phase IVOCs.

Extreme Exposure Levels of PCDD/Fs Inhaled from Biomass Burning Activity for Cooking in Typical Rural Households

Di Wu et al.

Summary: This study found that households using biomass fuels for cooking have the highest risk of PCDD/Fs exposure, with levels significantly higher than other environments and control groups. The emissions of PCDD/Fs during biomass combustion may pose a potential health risk to humans.

Measurement report: Distinct emissions and volatility distribution of intermediate-volatility organic compounds from on-road Chinese gasoline vehicles: implication of high secondary organic aerosol formation potential

Rongzhi Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the emissions and SOA formation potential of IVOCs from a Chinese gasoline vehicle, finding higher IVOC EFs and different volatility distribution compared to US vehicles. Factors such as fuel type, starting mode, and acceleration rates were found to impact IVOC EFs. The study also revealed the importance of reducing IVOCs in controlling air pollution in urban areas of China.
