The role of shallow convection in the momentum budget of the trades from large-eddy-simulation hindcasts

Kevin C. Helfer et al.

Summary: Based on simulations conducted over the North Atlantic, this study found that shallow convection plays a significant role in the momentum budget of easterly trade winds, particularly in slowing down the flow below cloud base. The unresolved processes near the surface were well captured by traditional K-diffusion theory, while convective-scale motions contributed the most in the upper part of the mixed layer.

Counter-Gradient Momentum Transport Through Subtropical Shallow Convection in ICON-LEM Simulations

Vishal Dixit et al.

Summary: The study found that subtropical shallow convection plays a role in affecting trade winds by exhibiting a noticeable friction effect on momentum transport, especially significant below cloud base while minimal within the cloud layer. Analysis of momentum flux showed that in the cloud layer, the counter-gradient flux is primarily driven by convectively-triggered nonhydrostatic pressure gradients and horizontal circulations surrounding the clouds.
