Approximate Models for Lateral Growth on Ice Crystal Surfaces during Vapor Depositional Growth

Jerry Y. Harrington et al.

Summary: Measurements show that lateral growth of facets on frozen water droplets differs from predictions by traditional models. Two approximate theories explain the lateral growth features on frozen water droplets and predict a decrease in area-average deposition coefficient over time, as well as a constant mass growth rate.

Is Ice Formation by Sea Spray Particles at Cirrus Temperatures Controlled by Crystalline Salts?

Ryan J. Patnaude et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ice nucleating ability of sea spray aerosol (SSA) particles and their primary constituent sodium chloride (NaCl) at temperatures below 235 K. Results show that above 220 K, most NaCl and SSA particles freeze via homogeneous nucleation at high water relative humidities, while below 220 K, a strong heterogeneous freezing phenomenon occurs. The calculations suggest that particle size does not determine the efficiency of freezing for NaCl and SSA particles, indicating the potential significance of SSAs as ice nucleating particles in cirrus temperatures.

Aerosol-cloud interactions: the representation of heterogeneous ice activation in cloud models

Bernd Kaercher et al.

Summary: Ice formation in clouds can occur through heterogeneous nucleation induced by ice-nucleating particles (INPs) or through homogeneous nucleation in supercooled liquid-water clouds. Laboratory studies have shown that a balance between INP and ice crystal numbers is necessary to maintain total particle number stability in clouds.
