Young adults' coping strategies against loneliness during the COVID-19-related quarantine in Greece

Adrianos Golemis et al.

Summary: This cross-sectional study investigated the social responsibility, loneliness, and coping strategies of young adults during the COVID-19-related quarantine in Greece. The results showed that participants had a relatively high sense of social responsibility and a moderate level of loneliness, with higher levels reported by women. Humour, practicing sports, and sharing thoughts and feelings about COVID-19 with others predicted lower levels of loneliness.

Summary: This systematic literature review aimed to assess the impact of social prescribing programs on loneliness, showing that these programs can reduce loneliness and usage of healthcare resources. While individuals and service providers view social prescribing as a helpful tool in addressing loneliness, the variability in evidence and limited number of studies call for further research to fully understand its impact.

Promoting youth mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic: A longitudinal study

Maya L. Rosen et al.

Summary: During the COVID-19 pandemic, internalizing and externalizing psychopathology significantly increased in youth. Factors such as having a structured routine, reducing passive screen time, lower exposure to pandemic-related news media, more time in nature, and adequate sleep were associated with reduced psychopathology. The association between pandemic-related stressors and psychopathology was weaker for youth with limited passive screen time, and not significant for children with lower news media consumption related to the pandemic.

The trajectory of loneliness in UK young adults during the summer to winter months of COVID-19

Yanran Hu et al.

Summary: Current research has shown that young adults are at the greatest risk of loneliness during the pandemic, with a sharp rise in winter months under the national lockdown. Findings suggest that young adults with long-standing physical or mental health conditions, lower household income, or unemployment are more likely to report feeling lonely. The study also highlights the differential effect of emotional support on loneliness for males and females, with greater emotional support associated with less loneliness in males but no association shown for females.

My Life during the Lockdown: Emotional Experiences of European Adolescents during the COVID-19 Crisis

Alberto Forte et al.

Summary: This study explored the emotional reactions of 2105 secondary school students aged 14-19 in Italy, Romania, and Croatia during the lockdown. Findings revealed that adolescents aged >14 years, living in small flats, and not spending time outside were more likely to report negative emotional reactions, with boys less likely than girls to report these emotions. Students who had lost someone to COVID-19 were also more likely to experience anger. The results may help identify adolescents at risk for negative emotional reactions during and after the COVID-19 crisis.
