Indices of Heart Rate Variability and Performance During a Response-Conflict Task Are Differently Associated With ADHD and Autism

Alessio Bellato et al.

Summary: The study investigated autonomic arousal, attention, and response conflict in individuals with ADHD and autism, finding that slower and less accurate performance characterized both ADHD and autism, with different electrophysiological indices. The relationship between ADHD and slower task performance was mediated by reduced HRV.

Heart Rate Variability in Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder and Associations With Medication and Symptom Severity

Rinku Thapa et al.

Summary: The study found that children with ASD exhibited reduced resting HRV compared to neurotypical children, especially those who were taking psychotropic medication. The data also tentatively suggests a relationship between HRV and social impairment symptoms in children with ASD, with more severe repetitive behaviors associated with decreased resting HRV. These findings highlight the importance of exploring HRV as a risk factor for cardiovascular health in children with ASD.

Neurological Disorders and Risk of Arrhythmia

Joyce Bernardi et al.

Summary: Neurological disorders are linked to increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, but the molecular mechanisms are not well understood. Dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, autonomic nervous system activity, and inflammation predispose individuals to psychiatric disorders and cardiac dysfunction. Antipsychotic and antidepressant medications can increase the risk of adverse cardiac events by blocking critical cardiac repolarization genes.

Autonomic nervous system dysfunction in schizophrenia: impact on cognitive and metabolic health

Nicolette Stogios et al.

Summary: Autonomic dysfunction is closely related to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia, including symptom severity, cognitive impairment, and cardiometabolic comorbidities. Studies have shown that the strongest association of low heart rate variability is noted among patients receiving antipsychotic treatment with high-affinity muscarinic antagonism.
