Acute and Life-threatening Complications in Cushing Syndrome: Prevalence, Predictors, and Mortality

Marie Helene Schernthaner-Reiter et al.

Summary: This study analyzed acute and life-threatening complications in patients with Cushing syndrome, revealing a wide range of complications including infections, thromboembolic events, and hypokalemia in benign CS patients, with higher rates observed in malignant CS. Mortality rates were significantly higher in patients with malignant CS compared to benign CS.

Glucocorticoids dexamethasone and prednisolone suppress fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23)

Martina Feger et al.

Summary: FGF23, mainly secreted by bone cells, regulates renal phosphate reabsorption and active vitamin D formation. Glucocorticoids can suppress FGF23 production and increase the expression of negative regulators of FGF23. In mice, a single dose of glucocorticoids reduces FGF23 levels and enhances active vitamin D.

Age-dependent sex differences in calcium and phosphate homeostasis

W. N. H. Koek et al.

Summary: The study found that women have significantly higher levels of serum calcium and phosphate compared to men above the age of 45, with no sex differences found in younger age groups. Men had the highest levels of serum calcium and phosphate in the youngest age group, while women showed significantly higher serum calcium levels in the 1-17 and >= 45 age groups compared to the 18-44 age group. Serum phosphate levels in women varied across the three different age groups, with the highest level in the 1-17 age group and the lowest in the 18-44 age group.

Cushing's Syndrome Effects on the Thyroid

Rosa Maria Paragliola et al.

Summary: Endogenous Cushing's syndrome not only affects phenotype and metabolism, but may also have important effects on other endocrine axes, such as the hypothalamus-pituitary-thyroid axis and the development of autoimmune thyroid diseases. Curing hypercortisolism can restore normal thyroid axis activity, but the impact of Cushing's syndrome on thyroid function may also be related to medication used for treatment.
