How the Severity and Mechanism of Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Dysfunction during Monitored Thyroidectomy Impact on Postoperative Voice

Tzu-Yen Huang et al.

Summary: Intraoperative neuromonitoring can assess RLN function during thyroid surgery. This study analyzed 1021 patients who underwent monitored thyroidectomy to investigate the impact of RLN dysfunction severity and mechanism on postoperative voice. Patients with more severe RLN dysfunction had worse voice outcomes, especially those with thermal injury and asymmetric vocal fold motion. Avoiding thermal injury and early identification of mechanical injury are crucial for optimal voice and swallowing outcomes after thyroid surgery.

Comparison of Surgical Complications Rates Between LigaSure Small Jaw and Clamp-and-Tie Hemostatic Technique in 1,000 Neuro-Monitored Thyroidectomies

Cheng-Hsin Liu et al.

Summary: The study of one thousand consecutive neuro-monitored thyroidectomy patients found that the use of LSJ in sutureless thyroidectomy has lower surgical complication rates, especially in postoperative hematoma and hypocalcemia, compared to the traditional clamp-and-tie technique.

Training Courses in Laryngeal Nerve Monitoring in Thyroid and Parathyroid Surgery- The INMSG Consensus Statement

Che-Wei Wu et al.

Summary: Intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) has become an integral part of thyroid surgery globally, with increasing interest and adoption in recent years. Specific training in IONM devices and procedures can significantly shorten the learning curve for surgeons, leading to improved surgical efficiency and safety. The International Neural Monitoring Study Group (INMSG) provides consensus guidelines and essential elements for training programs to ensure the optimal implementation of IONM in surgical practice for the benefit of thyroid and parathyroid surgical patients.

Hyperthermal liquid, spray, and smog may be potential risk factors for recurrent laryngeal nerve thermal injury during thyroid surgeries

Xing Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that hyperthermal liquid, spray or smog may be risk factors for RLN thermal injury caused by energy-based surgical devices. Implementation of endoscopic gauze may be a promising method to protect the RLN from thermal damage.
