Interpretable Machine Learning Framework Reveals Robust Gut Microbiome Features Associated With Type 2 Diabetes

Wanglong Gou et al.

Summary: Our study identified core gut microbial features associated with type 2 diabetes risk and future glucose increment using an interpretable machine learning framework. We also confirmed the relationship between these features and type 2 diabetes through human fecal sample transplantation to germ-free mice. Additionally, we found body fat distribution to be a key factor modulating the gut microbiome-type 2 diabetes relationship.

Large-scale association analyses identify host factors influencing human gut microbiome composition

Alexander Kurilshikov et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant effects of host genetic variation on microbial composition, with the lactase (LCT) gene locus showing an age-dependent association with Bifidobacterium abundance. Other associations, while suggestive, were enriched for taxa with high heritability and for genes expressed in the intestine and brain.

Gut microbiota compositions and metabolic functions in type 2 diabetes differ with glycemic durability to metformin monotherapy

Wei-Wen Hung et al.

Summary: The study found that there were different compositions of gut microbiota with unique microbial metabolic pathways between type 2 diabetes patients with glycemic durability and those without durability to metformin monotherapy. The biosynthesis of thiamine and lipopolysaccharide was dominant in the durable group, which suggests that microbial salvage by increasing thiamine biosynthesis may be beneficial for maintaining optimal glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

The gut microbiome and type 2 diabetes status in the Multiethnic Cohort

Gertraud Maskarinec et al.

Summary: The study found that T2D patients had decreased gut microbiome diversity and increased endotoxin levels, compared to individuals with normal glucose levels. T2D status was associated with changes in the abundance of specific bacterial genera, which may be influenced by the use of metformin.

Association of Insulin Resistance and Type 2 Diabetes With Gut Microbial Diversity A Microbiome-Wide Analysis From Population Studies

Zhangling Chen et al.

Summary: This study found that higher microbiome alpha diversity, as well as more butyrate-producing gut bacteria, were associated with lower incidence of type 2 diabetes and reduced levels of insulin resistance in individuals without diabetes, providing insights into the etiology, pathogenesis, and potential treatment of type 2 diabetes.
