Recent Advances in Catalytic Transfer Hydrogenation with Formic Acid over Heterogeneous Transition Metal Catalysts

Renfeng Nie et al.

Summary: Transition-metal-catalyzed transfer hydrogenation using formic acid as an in situ hydrogen donor has gained significant attention for its efficiency, atom economy, and sustainability compared to traditional high-pressure hydrogen processes. This review summarizes recent progress in heterogeneous hydrogen transfer from formic acid for catalytic transformations of biomass-derived chemicals, nitrogen-containing compounds, and organochlorinated compounds. The article also highlights the synthesis strategies of heterogeneous metal catalysts and optimization of reaction conditions to enhance catalytic activity and regulate product distribution, as well as structure-activity relationships and mechanistic interpretations of formic acid-mediated transfer hydrogenation. Discussion on current challenges and future outlook for the field is also presented.

Evaluation and optimization of the environmental performance of PHA downstream processing

M. Saavedra del Oso et al.

Summary: Biobased and biodegradable materials like PHAs have great potential as alternatives to traditional plastics, but their market share is limited by high production costs. The study evaluates eight PHA downstream processes from both economic and environmental perspectives, highlighting the importance of optimizing environmental performance for sustainable bioeconomy. Through systematic review and assessment, it is proven that incorporating life cycle assessment in process and product design can make PHAs attractive materials in a sustainable bioeconomy.

\Three-dimensional hydrophobic porous organic polymers confined Pd nanoclusters for phase-transfer catalytic hydrogenation of nitroarenes in water

Qiang Song et al.

Summary: This study successfully fabricated two three-dimensional hydrophobic porous organic polymers (3D-HPOPs-1 and 3D-HPOPs-2) with high specific surface areas and unique microporous-mesoporous structures, and confined ultrafine Pd nanoclusters into them for catalytic reactions with high conversion and selectivity. The prepared catalyst showed excellent hydrophobicity and easy recyclability, providing a feasible strategy for fabricating noble-metal-nanocluster-based catalysts under mild and environmentally friendly conditions.
