RNA contributions to the form and function of biomolecular condensates

Christine Roden et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the significant contribution of RNA to cellular liquid-liquid phase separation and condensate formation, which play important roles in various cellular functions such as RNA transport, supporting catalytic processes, and stress responses. Although RNA and RNA-protein condensates are important in cells, the role of RNA in liquid-liquid phase separation has received less attention in comparison to RNA-binding proteins.Properties such as composition, length, structure, modifications, and expression levels of RNA can modulate the biophysical features of native condensates, influencing their size, shape, viscosity, and composition. RNA-protein condensates are involved in various cellular functions, including cell compartmentalization through RNA transport and localization, supporting catalytic processes, storage and inheritance of specific molecules, as well as buffering noise and responding to stress.

Crystallization by Amorphous Particle Attachment: On the Evolution of Texture

Vanessa Schoeppler et al.

Summary: Crystallization by particle attachment is a gradual process with unique pathways of crystal growth defined by thermodynamic and kinetic constraints at each step. By studying the prismatic ultrastructure in bivalve shells, the ability to analyze the evolution of form and texture of biological mineralized tissues and design synthetic materials formed by CPA is significantly enhanced. The mechanistic link between mineral deposition kinetics and crystallographic texture emergence is established, providing insights into how shapes and patterns are morphed through amorphous precursors.

Phase separation drives aberrant chromatin looping and cancer development

Jeong Hyun Ahn et al.

Summary: The development of cancer is closely associated with genetic abnormalities targeting proteins with intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs), which play a crucial role in leukaemic transformation. The presence of IDRs within chimera transcription factors promotes liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS), enhancing their genomic targeting and inducing aberrant three-dimensional chromatin structure during tumourous transformation.

Summary: Liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) has been identified as a central paradigm for understanding how membraneless organelles compartmentalize cellular activities. A superfamily of plant GBP-like GTPases (GBPLs) has been found to form LLPS-driven condensates in the nucleus to protect against infection and autoimmunity. This GBPL circuit reprograms host gene expression for disease resistance by recruiting specific transcriptional coactivators and RNA polymerase II machinery.
