Microstructure characterization of gradient structured surface layer in pure zirconium

Summary: A gradient nanostructure with thickness of 150 μm was produced on pure zirconium by ultrasonic shot peening, characterized by EBSD and TEM to reveal multiple gradient features such as grain size, strain, and deformation twinning gradients. Analysis showed that the interaction between slip and twinning accelerated grain refinement and led to the formation of nano grains in the surface layer of pure zirconium during USSP process.

Enhanced frictional performance in gradient nanostructures by strain delocalization

Summary: Extensive experiments have shown that gradient metals have significantly lower coefficient of friction (COF) compared to their homogeneous counterparts, with the mechanism stemming from strain delocalization induced by co-deformation. By tuning the gradient microstructure, the COF can be further minimized. This study provides insights for designing gradient nanostructured Cu with high strength and low COF.
