50 years of lake ice research from active microwave remote sensing: Progress and prospects

Justin Murfitt et al.

Summary: Lake ice in northern latitudes is an important feature that plays a role in weather modulation, travel, and impact on fish habitat and access to freshwater. Global Climate Observing System identifies lake ice cover and thickness as Essential Climate Variables. Climate warming trends have led to thinner ice and longer open water season, increasing the importance of remote sensing for lake ice monitoring. Future research should focus on advancing the understanding of active microwave signals, applying machine learning algorithms to ice classification, exploring ice thickness retrieval methods, and considering factors like data availability and snow on lake ice.

An improved modeling of precipitation phase and snow in the Lancang River Basin in Southwest China

ZhongYing Han et al.

Summary: This study aims to improve precipitation phase and snow modeling for the Lancang River basin using a hydrological model and multisource remotely sensed data. Results show that using MODIS land surface temperature product and air temperature product can more precisely distinguish precipitation phase. Snowfall and snowmelt are primarily controlled by rainfall and snowfall temperature thresholds in snow modeling, with in situ observations potentially leading to overestimation of snowmelt runoff.

Inter-annual variation in lake ice composition in the European Arctic: observations based on high-resolution thermistor strings

Summary: The study highlights the significant impact of climate change and global warming on the cryosphere, particularly on the heat and mass balance of snow and ice. Data collected from Lake Orajarvi near the Finnish Space Centre in Sodankyla show an increasing trend in ice thickness. The findings can be applied to further investigate lake ice surface heat balance and improve snow to ice transformation parameterization in snow and ice models.
