Effects of temperature and grain size on active twinning systems in commercially pure titanium

Genki Tsukamoto et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of grain boundary, grain size, and deformation temperature on twinning deformation in polycrystalline commercially pure titanium. Different twinning systems were observed at different deformation temperatures and grain sizes, indicating the complex interplay between these factors in twinning deformation.

A unified mechanistic model for Hall-Petch and inverse Hall-Petch relations of nanocrystalline metals based on intragranular dislocation storage

Quanfeng Han et al.

Summary: As the average grain size decreases, the reduction in intragranular dislocation storage ability is revealed as the underlying mechanism of the breakdown of Hall-Petch behavior in nanocrystalline (NC) metals. The prediction of the critical grain size for the HP-inverse HP transition of NC metals agrees well with experimental results, showing remarkable ductility enhancement in the inverse HP region dominated by harmonized deformation of grain boundaries and grain interior. Additionally, the increase in grain boundary strength leads to enhancement in yield strength and delay in occurrence of the inverse HP behavior in NC metals.

Comparison of anisotropic crack tip behavior in hcp titanium by two-dimensional and three-dimensional atomistic simulations

Le Chang et al.

Summary: The comparison between 2D and 3D atomistic simulations of anisotropic crack tip response in hcp titanium shows significant differences in near tip stress fields, incipient crack tip deformation, and critical stress intensity factor. Crack tip plasticity is predominantly contributed by the inclined slip mode in 2D simulations, while the lower stress triaxiality in 3D simulations leads to easier dislocation nucleation. The behaviors observed in 3D simulations are more consistent with experimental results.
