cGMP and mitochondrial K+ channels-Compartmentalized but closely connected in cardioprotection

Robert Lukowski et al.

Summary: The 3',5'-cGMP pathway activates cytoprotective responses and enhances cardiomyocyte survival during myocardial I/R injury. Activation of cGMP-dependent protein kinase I leads to phosphorylation of substrates facilitating opening of mitoK(ATP) and mitoBK channels, providing protection against I/R-induced damages. The connection between the cGMP cascade and mitoK(+) channels should be further explored as a potential adjunct to reperfusion therapy in myocardial infarction.
