A Review and Perspective on Optical Phased Array for Automotive LiDAR

Silicon nitride assisted 1x64 optical phased array based on a SOI platform

Summary: In this study, a 1x64 optical phased array (OPA) based on a silicon on insulator (SOI) platform with integrated silicon nitride was demonstrated. The input port of the OPA was fabricated using a silicon nitride waveguide, and a silicon waveguide with heater was used as the phase shifter. A double layer silicon nitride assisted grating was utilized in the emitter to reduce the emission strength and spot size.

Unidirectional large-scale waveguide grating with uniform radiation for optical phased array

Summary: Two novel waveguide gratings for optical phased array transmitters have been studied, with the dual-level chain and dual-level fishbone structures achieving high unidirectional radiation performance through design, and with apodized perturbation allowing for uniform radiation without compromising performance. Experimental results show both structures reaching 80-90% unidirectionality, with further analysis indicating that the dual-level fishbone structure is more feasible and robust to process variations in achieving uniform radiation.
