A Concise Route to 2-Sulfonylacetonitriles from Sodium Metabisulfite

Yanfang Yao et al.

Summary: This study describes a three-component reaction using sodium metabisulfite as a sulfur dioxide surrogate to synthesize 2-arylsulfonylacetonitriles under mild conditions. The reaction shows good functional group compatibility and proceeds smoothly at room temperature without the need of any catalyst or additive. The synthetic utility of this method is further demonstrated by the transformation of the product into other useful compounds.

Non-innocent Radical Ion Intermediates in Photoredox Catalysis: Parallel Reduction Modes Enable Coupling of Diverse Aryl Chlorides

Alyah F. Chmiel et al.

Summary: This photocatalytic system utilizes radical anion intermediates to enhance photoreductant activity, enabling diverse aryl radical coupling reactions. Mechanistic studies reveal two parallel pathways for substrate reduction, both facilitated by the key terminal reductant byproduct, carbon dioxide radical anion.

Photo-induced thiolate catalytic activation of inert Caryl-hetero bonds for radical borylation

Shun Wang et al.

Summary: Efforts are being made to develop photo-redox catalysts with high redox power, although current methods face challenges in activating bonds with high bond dissociation energy and substrates with high reduction potentials. A novel photocatalytic strategy using thiolate as a catalyst has been introduced for the activation of inert substituted arenes for aryl borylation, expanding the scope of aryl radical precursors and demonstrating good functional-group tolerance. Spectroscopic investigations suggest the formation of a charge-transfer complex as the key step to activate the substrates.

Visible-light-induced surfactant-promoted sulfonylation of alkenes and alkynes with sulfonyl chloride by the formation of an EDA-complex with NaI in water at room temperature

Li Lin et al.

Summary: An efficient visible-light-induced iodosulfonyl reaction of alkenes in water was accomplished using an EDA complex strategy without the need for transition-metal catalysts and organic solvents. The method showed a broad substrate scope, high chemical selectivity, and was performed at room temperature.
