Multiple Functional Organocatalyst-Promoted Inert C-C Activation: Mechanism and Origin of Selectivities

Min Zhang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an NHC and NHC center dot H+ cooperative catalytic model for inert C-C bond activations, and uses density functional theory calculations to discover two ways in which the organocatalyst functions in [4 + 2] annulation reactions. It also introduces an atomic electronegativity index to predict the site of stereoselective C-C bond formation accurately.

Theoretical Model for N-Heterocyclic Carbene-Catalyzed Desymmetrizing [4+1] and [4+2] Annulations of an Enal and Aryldialdehyde with 1,3-Cyclopentenedione

Xinghua Wang et al.

Summary: Desymmetrizing reactions of olefins catalyzed by N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) have been rapidly developing, but the origins of the chemo- and stereoselectivities in these reactions are still poorly understood. This study proposes a mechanistic map to predict how these selectivities are controlled by different active intermediates and contradicts a previous proposition regarding the determination of product structures by a transformation between a pair of isomers.

Boron insertion into alkyl ether bonds via zinc/nickel tandem catalysis

Hairong Lyu et al.

Summary: Mild methods for cleaving the C-O bond in alkyl ethers using dibromoboranes in the presence of a nickel catalyst and zinc reductant have been shown to simplify chemical syntheses and facilitate oxygen-to-nitrogen substitution or one-carbon homologation. Mechanistic studies have revealed a cleavage-then-rebound pathway via zinc/nickel tandem catalysis.

Is the reaction sequence in phosphine-catalyzed [8+2] cycloaddition controlled by electrophilicity?

Wen-Xuan Lin et al.

Summary: In the study of the mechanism of phosphine-catalyzed [8+2] cycloaddition, it was found that electrophilicity plays a role in hindering nucleophilic attack but is not predictive of priority.
