C-C Bond Cleavages of Cyclopropenes: Operating for Selective Ring-Opening Reactions

Ruben Vicente

Summary: This review summarizes key reactivities relying on C-C bond cleavages of cyclopropenes, including both metal-catalyzed and metal-free transformations. The emphasis is on the synthetic utility and mechanistic aspects of various methodologies discussed, covering a range of reactions involving vinyl carbenes, metathesis processes, heterocycles syntheses, SEAr reactions, metalation-ring opening sequences, and cycloadditions. The focus is on results from 2007 to 2019, with relevant pioneering transformations eventually included.

Selective Alkynylallylation of the C-C σ Bond of Cyclopropenes

Zeqi Jiang et al.

Summary: A novel Pd-catalyzed reaction has been developed for selective alkynylallylation of specific C-C sigma bonds in cyclopropenes, providing an efficient approach to highly functionalized dienynes. The reaction features fascinating atom and step economy and can produce gram-scale products using a simple, neutral, and low-cost catalytic system with high TONs. DFT calculations suggest that the success of the reaction relies on the selective insertion of cyclopropene double bonds into the C-Pd bond of ambidentate Pd complex and subsequent nonclassical beta-C elimination.

Ruthenium-Catalyzed Chemoselective N-H Bond Insertion Reactions of 2-Pyridones/7-Azaindoles with Sulfoxonium Ylides

Xiaofeng Liu et al.

Summary: A ruthenium-catalyzed highly chemoselective N-alkylation of 2-pyridones has been developed, providing N-alkylated 2-pyridone derivatives in good yields and excellent N-selectivity. The key to this unprecedented reaction is the use of CpRu(PPh3)(2)Cl as the catalyst and sulfoxonium ylides as the alkylation reagents, which can also be applied to 7-azaindoles with slight variations in reaction conditions. Furthermore, sulfonium ylides are also suitable alkylation reagents for good selectivity in N-alkylation of 2-pyridones.

Pd-Catalyzed Regio- and Enantioselective Aminoarylation of Allenols with Aryl Iodides and 2-Pyridones

Hongfang Li et al.

Summary: A new asymmetric catalytic protocol has been developed for the synthesis of enantioenriched N-allyl 2-pyrodones via a Pd-catalyzed aminoarylation reaction. The reaction proceeded smoothly to afford a variety of functionalized N-allylic 2-pyridones in high yields with good regioselectivities and excellent enantioselectivities, utilizing a palladium complex as the catalyst.

Chemo- and Enantioselective Insertion of Furyl Carbene into the N-H Bond of 2-Pyridones

Kai Wang et al.

Summary: Asymmetric carbene insertion reactions are crucial for constructing carbon-heteroatom bonds, but high enantioselectivity typically requires the use of donor-acceptor diazo compounds with an ester group. This study presents the first chemo and enantioselective formal N-H insertion of 2-pyridones using enynones as donor-donor carbene precursors, with DFT calculations revealing an unprecedented enantioselective 1,4-proton transfer from O to C. The rhodium catalyst's chiral pocket, along with steric repulsion and pi-pi interactions of the propeller ligand, play essential roles in determining the selectivities.

Gold-Catalyzed Synthesis of Diaza-hexatrienes Via Diazo Attack at Vinylgold Carbenes: An Easy Access to 1H-Pyrazolo[4,3-b]pyridine-5-ones

Vikas Ashokrao Sadaphal et al.

Summary: This work describes a gold-catalyzed stereoselective synthesis of highly substituted E-configured 2,3-diaza-1,3,5-hexatrienes using alpha-diazo nitrites and cyclopropene derivatives. The products are formed through an atypical diazo attack of alpha-aryldiazo nitrites at vinylgold carbenes, and a novel anionic cyclization method was developed to form 1H-pyrazolo[4,3-b]pyridine-5-ones from derivatives of this family.

CoIII-Catalyzed C-H Alkenylation and Allylation with Cyclopropenes via Sequential C-H/C-C Bond Activation

Ye Lim Kim et al.

Summary: A cobalt-catalyzed strategy involving cyclopropenes as versatile alkenylating and allylating reagents was reported for C-H alkenylation and C-H allylation of arenes. The process leads to the synthesis of a wide range of alkenylated (hetero)arenes with complete (E)-stereoselectivity, as well as allylated (hetero)arenes with high stereoselectivity. The method involves sequential C-H and C-C bond cleavage, showcasing potential for efficient and selective synthesis.

Cobalt-catalyzed multisubstituted allylation of the chelation-assisted C-H bond of (hetero)arenes with cyclopropenes

Kuppan Ramachandran et al.

Summary: The Cp*Co-III-catalyzed ring-opening isomerization of cyclopropenes allows for the introduction of various substituents on the C-H bonds of arenes and heteroarenes to synthesize multisubstituted allylarenes. This methodology demonstrates high selectivity, excellent functional group tolerance, scalability, and the synthesis of cyclopenta[b]indoles. Additionally, a potential cobaltocycle intermediate was identified and a plausible mechanism was proposed.

Haoxuan Yuan et al.

Summary: A cooperative catalysis of Rh-2(OAc)(4) and a chiral phosphoric acid has enabled an enantioselective three-component reaction to produce chiral 3,3-disubstituted succinimides with good to high yields and high to excellent enantioselectivity. The resulting product containing an alkenyl species can be easily converted to a chiral tricyclic structure under mild conditions.
