C-H Bond Activation of Methane through Electronic Interaction with Pd(110)

Takanori Koitaya et al.

Summary: The adsorption and interaction of methane on Pd(110) were studied using vibrational spectroscopy, X-ray spectroscopy, and DFT calculations. The vibrational modes of methane were perturbed by the interaction with the Pd surface, showing softening of C-H bonds. The electronic interaction was evidenced by X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, indicating mixing between methane molecular orbitals and the substrate d-band.

Evidence for a higher-order topological insulator in a three-dimensional material built from van der Waals stacking of bismuth-halide chains

Ryo Noguchi et al.

Summary: Research on topological quantum materials with van der Waals structures is gaining attention, showing that a slight modification of stacking can induce a transition from trivial insulator to higher-order topological insulator. This opens doors for engineering topologically non-trivial edge states for future spintronics applications.

Indirect to direct band gap crossover in two-dimensional WS2(1-x)Se2x alloys

Cyrine Ernandes et al.

Summary: In transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, the transition from indirect to direct band gap occurs when the thickness drops to one monolayer, with different alloy compositions of WS2(1-x)Se2x significantly affecting this trend. The highest micro-PL intensity is found in bilayer WS2(1-x)Se2x (x = 0.8), with only a 2-fold decrease in its maximum value when transitioning from mono-layer to bi-layer. The high PL intensity in WS2(1-x)Se2x allows for the development of spectrally tunable light-emitting devices.

In situ AP-XPS study on reduction of oxidized Rh catalysts under CO exposure and catalytic reaction conditions

Ryo Toyoshima et al.

Summary: The reduction of oxidized Rh catalysts under CO exposure and reaction conditions was studied using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was observed that at higher temperatures, the reduction of oxidized Rh nanoparticles deposited on SiO2 shifts to a higher temperature in the presence of NO compared to O-2, indicating that NO more strongly prevents the reduction of oxidized Rh catalysts.

Interface Structures and Electronic States of Epitaxial Tetraazanaphthacene on Single-Crystal Pentacene

Yuki Gunjo et al.

Summary: By analyzing the physicochemical properties of the molecular interface between TANC and pentacene single crystal (PnSC) substrates using techniques such as atomic force microscopy, grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD), and photoelectron spectroscopy, it was found that TANC molecules can assemble into epitaxial overlayers with (010) orientation crystallites on PnSC substrates, and there is no apparent interface dipole present at the interface.

Formation and Behavior of Carbonates on Ag(110) in the Presence of Ethylene and Oxygen

Kazuhisa Isegawa et al.

Summary: The formation of intermediate species on Ag(110) surfaces under the presence of ethylene and oxygen in the sub-Torr pressure range was studied using near-ambient-pressure XPS and NEXAFS measurements. Carbonates were observed mainly under ethylene-rich conditions, adsorbed almost parallel to the Ag(110) surface. These carbonates coexist with surface oxides, with different composition ratios depending on the ethylene/oxygen pressure ratio and surface temperature.

Extremely large magnetoresistance from electron-hole compensation in the nodal-loop semimetal ZrP2

J. Bannies et al.

Summary: This study investigates the electronic properties of TMDP ZrP2 using ARPES and magnetotransport techniques, revealing its extremely large magnetoresistance and topological nodal loop. The ARPES measurements and band structure calculations confirm the experimental results, establishing ZrP2 as a platform for studying near-perfect e-h compensation and its interplay with topological band structures.
