Machining of SiC ceramic matrix composites: A review

Qinglong An et al.

Summary: FRCMCs-SiC, as the preferred material for hot section components, safety-critical components, and braking components, faces challenges in machining due to high brittleness, anisotropy, and heterogeneity. With increasing demand for FRCMCs-SiC parts, high-quality and high-efficient machining has become a hot issue.

Numerical model of unidirectional CFRP in machining: Development of an amended friction model

Jie Xu et al.

Summary: By proposing an amended friction model, the numerical model was significantly improved in predicting cutting and thrust forces, as well as chip formation. It was demonstrated that the relationship between normal force and friction coefficient is nonlinear in tool-CFRP tangential contact, and the friction coefficient is not a constant value.

Study on Burr Formation and Tool Wear in Drilling CFRP and Its Hybrid Composites

Jeong Hwan Lee et al.

Summary: Fiber-reinforced plastics/polymers (FRP) are widely used in various industries for their high strength-to-weight ratio and other properties. Drilling holes in FRP materials can be challenging due to their non-homogenous and anisotropic properties, resulting in various damages. In this study, carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP)/aramid fiber reinforced polymer (AFRP) hybrid composites (C-AFRP) were synthesized and their drilling characteristics were investigated, showing that C-AFRP had higher tensile strength and better drilling characteristics compared to CFRP.

Removal mechanism of CFRP by laser multi direction interaction

L. Y. Xu et al.

Summary: A heterogeneous simulation model considering carbon fiber and resin phase for laser ablation of CFRP was established and validated through simulation and experiments. The results showed that the laser scanning direction significantly affected the width of the heat affected zone and the fracture length of the carbon fiber, with an optimal scanning direction identified at a 45-degree angle.
