Effect of dispersing single and hybrid nanoparticles on tribological, thermo-physical, and stability characteristics of lubricants: a review

C. Pownraj et al.

Summary: This paper comprehensively analyzes and summarizes various research works on preparation, tribological property, thermo-physical property, and stability characteristics of both mono- and hybrid nanoparticle-based nanolubricants. The influencing factors such as base lubricants, nanoparticle size, shape, preparation methods, concentrations, nature of nanoparticles, surfactants, and temperature on nanolubricant characteristics are examined. Finally, stability of nanolubricant, various surfactants used and different stability measuring techniques are discussed.

Micromechanics of machining and wear in hard and brittle materials

Brian R. Lawn et al.

Summary: Hard and brittle solids with covalent/ionic bonding are widely used in modern manufacturing technologies, and optimizing shaping processes can reduce manufacturing time and cost while extending component longevity. However, the same processes can also contribute to wear and fatigue degradation in service. Education development of advanced finishing protocols for this class of solids requires a comprehensive understanding of damage mechanisms at small-scale contacts from a materials perspective. The role of microstructure in material removal modes is highlighted, and pathways to future research—experimental, analytical, and computational—are indicated.

pH-dependent lubrication mechanism of graphene oxide aqueous lubricants on the strip surface during cold rolling

Weixin Meng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the tribological performance and lubrication mechanism of graphene oxide aqueous lubricants with different pH levels on strip surfaces during cold rolling. The results showed that the alkaline lubricant (pH 9.0) exhibited the best lubrication performance, and increasing the pH value of the lubricant improved its anti-friction and anti-wear properties.

Study on the relationship between the tribological properties and oxidation degree of graphene derivatives in O/W emulsion

Yinglei Wu et al.

Summary: The research studied the single and double-side modification of graphene oxide with octadecylamine and its incorporation into O/W base emulsion. It was found that MGO1 had better tribological properties than MGO2. Chemical composition analysis of worn surfaces suggested that MGO1 nanosheets adsorbed more easily and were more actively involved in shearing processes.

Summary: The study investigated sodium polyphosphate and nano-TiO2 mixture as water-based hot rolling lubricants, showing excellent lubrication performance in a laboratory hot rolling mill by reducing the rolling force. Sodium polyphosphate formed easily sheared glass melt at high temperature, containing some nano-TiO2. The concept of combining inorganic polymer with nanoparticles to produce synergy effects provides new insight for designing lubricants for hot metal forming processes.
